Available to both iOS and Android users, the new features include a Slack-style "group catch up" option, and it is also possible to add a description to group chats, and search for individual participants. WhatsApp says the tool is created to help users quickly get up to speed inside a group after being away from the chat.
Introduced this February, WhatsApp allows users to add descriptions to their groups. WhatsApp Groups can have as many as 256 people and this will make this easy to do. Most of these new WhatsApp group features have been seen in prior Android beta builds, stable builds on either platform, or have been spotted in development but were disabled by default.
Group description: Now, WhatsApp will give description more prominence so that any new member to the WhatsApp Group understands the objective of the group. This feature can be found under "Group Info".
Having grown from a simple text-only chat app into a fully-featured service that offers voice chat and support for many forms of multimedia, these changes to WhatsApp group chat among others were well warranted. For example, the update brings with it new "admin controls" which let those in control determine who has the ability to adjust the group chat's icon, subject, or description. The latest update comes after the chat app gained compatibility with Instagram and Facebook videos, a feature announced during parent company Facebook's F8 conference last week.
Admin controls: WhatsApp has been rumoured to be working on admin controls for improving Groups experience for a long time.
Participant search: This new feature will let you find anyone in a group by searching for participants on the group info page.
Admins also can remove admin permissions from other participants and in a welcome change, group creators cannot be removed from the group they started. At the same time group creators can not be removed from the group they have started.
