Ashley 'hopes very much' that Benitez stays at Newcastle

Newcastle United claimed an emphatic 3-0 win over Chelsea at St.James' Park on the final day of the season. This club has to be in the top 10.

However, Newcastle have already stated their intentions to try and persuade him to stay on in the North-East and believe Chelsea will grant them their wish, rather than the Blues making a transfer mistake and allowing the former Fluminense star to move on before getting the chance to prove himself in west London.

"My future? I've heard so much talk, but I haven't spoken to De Laurentiis: I have a contract with Newcastle, I'm talking to them about my renewal".

"Now we have to be sure that we do the right things and then what I have said so many times - we need to be on the same page".

"I want to stay here after the summer, so I need to be focused, but I don't think this is the time to speak about it", he said with several games of the Premier League season left to play."I've enjoyed every game we've played".

"The fans have ambitions and we have ambitions, and we have to know if everybody has the same feelings too. The potential is there".

Shelvey appeared to have played himself into contention for a seat on the plane to Russian Federation with his recent form for Newcastle - with club legend Alan Shearer championing the Magpies ace's return to the England side.

And despite the home fans singing the name of Benitez, he was keen to dedicate the season to his players.

"I was really proud of that, but you can not sing the name of the manager if the team is doing badly", he said.

"In this case I think the players what they did last season, what they did this year is massive".

Benitez has celebrated some huge successes during his career, most notably when he led Liverpool to Champions League glory in Istanbul, but he regards this season's successful survival campaign as one of his most notable achievements.

"And the fans, the atmosphere here is togetherness, the relationship, the players they care, the manager, the staff, working together trying to achieve what we want to achieve".
