Last week, Xiaomi has launched its first selfie-focused smartphone dubbed as Xiaomi Redmi S2 in China. In the past, the Redmi Y2 name was spotted on Xiaomi India's website along with Mi A2, but Xiaomi is not teasing the launch of Mi A2 though. This also highlights the powerful battery life that most Xiaomi smartphones are known for. Xiaomi set up its first SMT unit in Tamil Nadu in April 2018 in collaboration with Foxcon to begin assembly of PCBs in India.
The Indian smartphone market is expected to show double-digit growth in 2018, on the back of the popularity of budget phones and vendors increasing their focus to make phones as well as high-value components locally despite pressure on margins, said analysts at International Data Corporation (IDC) India. There are reports that the upcoming Xiaomi Redmi Note 6 will ship with camera sensors manufactured internally by the production team of the company. However, what is interesting is that the phone is likely to launch in India as the Redmi Y2 instead of Redmi S2.
The Xiaomi Redmi S2 was launched in China on the 10th of May. The smartphone maker is also expected to launch its new online exclusive series under the brand "Realme". The smartphone starts at CNY 999 for 3 GB RAM and 32 GB storage and costs CNY 1,299 for 3 GB RAM and 64 GB storage. It will be interesting to see how Xiaomi prices it for our market, considering the budget segment is already dominated by its own Redmi 5 and Redmi Note 5 devices. Although there is a difference in the screen resolution. It sports a 5.7-inch 18:9 full HD+ display with narrow bezels all around. The "standard" G6 is built around a Snapdragon 450 chipset coupled with 3GB/4GB of RAM and 32GB/64GB of internal storage.
Both phones have the capability to go up to 256 GB with external micro SD cards. Even DxOMark praises Mi MIX 2S' camera, if that's something you're interested in, but camera benchmarks aside, the device does offer a considerable improvement over its predecessor, the Mi MIX 2S. At the front, there is a 16-megapixel camera with LED flash. This led to share growth of the online channel within smartphone market from to 34.2 percent in 2017Q4 to 36.0 percent in 2018Q1. Among other specs, there are a rear-mounted fingerprint reader and connectivity supports of Bluetooth 4.2 and Wi-Fi 11 b/g/n.
