Sean Manaea tosses no-hitter against Red Sox in dominant fashion

Manaea baffled the Red Sox on Saturday night and recorded the first no-hitter of the 2018 season. The play was scored as an error. However, neither should distract from Manaea's tremendous outing in which he induced 15 swinging strikes and allowed only three baserunners, none of which got past second base. Over the past two seasons, he's tossed 344 1/3 innings of 3.32 ERA ball with 9.4 K/9, 3.5 BB/9, 1.1 HR/9 and a 44.5 percent ground-ball rate.

"Oh man, my heart was beating out of my chest, and I was trying to do everything I could (to stay calm)", Manaea said in a post-game interview. "No", Red Sox manager Alex Cora told reporters of the call. On the next pitch, Mookie Betts flew out to the warning track in right field.

Boston looked as if it had a hit with two outs in the sixth at the Oakland Coliseum. The 26-year-old had yet to throw a complete game before Saturday. They overturned the call from a hit and ruled that Benintendi was out of the base path. That is, until the umpires conferred, determining that Benintendi had gone out of the baseline, and ruled him out. It's also the best sign yet that Manaea-a highly touted prospect with the Royals and the centerpiece of the deal that sent Ben Zobrist to Kansas City for that team's World Series run in 2015-is coming into his own as Oakland's ace.

"Do I agree with it?" Despite striking out 10 batters, Chirs Sale gave up three runs, taking the loss. Boston averaged 7.5 runs per game over the previous eight-game streak before being no-hit.
