Paul Ryan is giving up

House Speaker Paul Ryan, R-Wis., announced Wednesday that he will not seek re-election at the end of his current term.

Imagine what will happen if special counsel Robert Mueller concludes that Trump's campaign knowingly colluded with Russian Federation to influence the outcome of the 2016 election and that Trump obstructed justice in an attempt to bury the evidence. "Stay tuned for more retirements as Republicans increasingly realize that their midterm prospects are doomed".

Democrats need 23 seats to take over the House. The Senate, in all probability, will still lack the 67 votes to remove Trump from office.

"Sometimes when someone is leaving they become more bold and not less", Rep. Mark Meadows (R-N.C.), head of the arch-conservative House Freedom Caucus, told reporters. Vice President Mike Pence is an obvious option, but he might be even more tainted by association with a disgraced ex-president and even weaker politically than Gerald Ford was in 1976. Bryce pounced on Ryan's withdrawal from the race: "We just repealed Paul Ryan", he tweeted.

Regarding potential action in Syria specifically, Ryan also said he thought it was "important for us to help lead the global community to make sure that people are held accountable for these mass atrocities". What better way to turn the page from a candidate who binge-watches Fox News than to choose one who reads budget documents for fun? The profile boost, which comes with fundraising and organizational help, was an early sign of the party's optimism about toppling Ryan and the GOP majority.

"They're middle of the road in temperament, and I think that no matter what happens in November, that's a big brain drain and loss of experience in Congress for the Republican Party", said Dr Matthew Green, a Catholic University professor who has taught on politics in the age of Trump.

"Well, he has the authority under the existing AUMF", Ryan said Thursday, adding later, "With respect to the authorities, the existing AUMF. gives him the authority to do what he needs to do, what he may or may not do". Today the debt is more than $21 trillion-and climbing. "Voters in Wisconsin's First District are ready for a representative who will fight for them". A final decision was made over the two-week congressional recess, which he partly spent on a family vacation in the Czech Republic.

Scalise is viewed as more conservative than McCarthy.

Ryan failed to distance himself enough from Trump's barrage of racist, ignorant and belligerent public statements to assuage Democrats' misgivings in Congress, while also failing to align himself enough with the president to secure support from more radical Republicans. Some say this president really doesn't want to expand the base.

National polls now show Trump enjoys dominant approval ratings among Republicans, with 86 percent of party voters now supporting the president in the latest Quinnipiac Poll, a dramatic increase from his position before the 2016 elections.
