Raiders Free Agent Watch: Cardinals release FS/SS Tyrann Mathieu

In his five-year career in Arizona, Mathieu has 281 tackles and 11 interceptions in 57 appearances. The 25-year-old was clearly prepared to roll the dice on earning a more lucrative contract on the open market. Mathieu had four years remaining on a $62.5 million extension he signed in August of 2016. Many teams - including the Texans, Giants, Jets and Steelers are rumored to be hot after Mathieu's services and the Pats would likely have to win a bidding war to land him.

Within minutes of his release, two NFL coaches had already reached out to NFL Network's Steve Wyche, expressing hope that their teams would pursue the safety-cornerback hybrid.

Bettcher followed Bruce Arians to desert from Indianapolis, and Mathieu was the Cardinals third-round pick that same year. Mathieu only appeared in 10 games the following season and finished with a career-low 35 tackles.

Especially not after Arizona reportedly made a decision to take a justified risk to pay often-injured quarterback Sam Bradford $20 million ($15 million guaranteed) for one season.

"Come to the BLOCK, where all we trying to do is win every game and not get caught up in weirdo stuff", Thomas tweeted at the time. In 2015, he was named to the Pro Bowl and the NFL All-Pro Team. Safeties as versatile as the fierce 5-foot-9 Mathieu are hard to find.

He tore his left ACL in 2013 and his right one in 2015.

However the Cardinals have continued to possess enormous positional talent, a fact that's been disguised by their 7-9 and 8-8 records over the last two seasons.

In 2017, he recorded 78 tackles, seven passes defended, five tackles for a loss, two interceptions, one sack, and one forced fumble.
