An advocacy group, Avaaz, placed 7,000 pairs of children's shoes on the lawn - each pair representing the life of a child killed by gun violence since the horrifying Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting in 2012 in CT. Once the display is over, the shoes will be donated to homeless shelters across the US. Members of AVAAZ spent the morning placing them as a symbol of the number of lives lost since the shooting at Sandy Hook elementary in Newtown, Ct.
Avaaz says shoes have also been donated by celebrities, including Bette Midler, Susan Sarandon, Alyssa Milano, Chelsea Handler, Vanessa Bayer, Brett Davern, Hayley Mills, Colm Meaney, Brenda Meaney, and Harry Clarke.
Wednesday's #ENOUGH National School Walkout, organized by the activists who helped plan the Women's March in Washington for the past two years, will begin at 10am local time (10pm, Malaysian time).
The Parkland shooting was the deadliest school shooting since 26 were killed in 2012 at Sandy Hook Elementary School in CT.
Although there was no link to any figures or date, Avaaz said the study found that guns kill an average of "1,300 American kids a year".
Students will also take to the streets of Washington, D.C., during the March For Our Lives on March 24 which is being championed by survivors of the mass shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Fla. "Culture is changing in America right now".
Dozens of colleges and universities across the country, including at least three Ivy League schools, have said their application processes will not consider disciplinary action taken against high school students who engage in protests.
The shoes will be donated when the monument is dismantled.
