Katy Perry shows off weird hidden talent on 'American Idol' debut

Where other shows, including The Four, Fox's Idol replacement, throw singers in front of a studio audience right away, Idol auditions dispense with the hubbub and introduce us to the talent pool before hair, make-up and ill-advised song suggestions get in the way.

Ron Boltongez captivated the judges with his story, especially Lionel Richie and Luke Bryan.

Bryan also chimed in and said they are empathetic and "emotional" more times than not.

"You are unique. You killed it", said Lionel. "I'm excited to feel the emotions that made me fall in love with music". That gave ABC its most-watched Sunday night in more than five years, beating "60 Minutes" on CBS (9.2 million and 8.5 million viewers); NBC's "American Ninja Warrior" (3.6 million) and "Timeless" (2.96 million); and Fox's "O.J".

In the end, even his kiss with Katy wasn't enough to secure him a spot in the next round, as the judges eventually chose to pass on Benjamin.

Ron, a 21-year-old entrepreneur originally from Congo who now resides in Plano, TX, sang "Let It Go" by James Bay. She is also the first to receive a golden ticket to Hollywood. "It's not your language, it's just for us", Perry told her fellow judges, making Davis blush.

For the judges, the new American Idol represents a chance to put their stamp on a job held by a succession of celebrity panelists. Both Perry and Richie join her on stage to dance with her. Michelle's energy level is through the roof.

I have no idea what's happening but Nico Bones, who admits he's hungover is ready to audition with "Worms".

Not fooling around!' As we get closer to the real deal I can nearly feel that we're going to be able to voice our opinions, ' he said, before adding the fighting words: 'I'm bringing my mace!'

Sock collector Zach D'Onofrio gifted the judges with new pairs of socks before his performance of "The Way You Look Tonight" by Frank Sinatra. The judges passed on him.

"We see these kids come in and their parents have bought them the nicest guitar money can buy", Bryan told him".

The last contestant is Dennis Lorenzo from West Philly who earns the final golden ticket of the day.
