Cardinals Expected To Release Adrian Peterson

The Arizona Cardinals will release the veteran running back Monday, ESPN's Adam Schefter reports, citing a source.

The expectation all along was that Peterson would be released before Friday, at which point he would've received a $750,000 roster bonus. Peterson had a couple of impressive outings for Arizona, but wound up on injured reserve with a neck injury before the year was out. However, if Peterson can't find a team to sign him for a deal that he would like, the Cardinals could bring him back at a much lower price. He'd merely be a backup if he re-signed in the desert, as David Johnson (wrist) was cleared for all activities in early February. In those six games, Peterson had 448 rushing yards with no touchdowns. He missed the last two games.

Peterson signed on with the New Orleans Saints a year ago but was traded to the Arizona Cardinals early in the season.

The 2012 NFL MVP sits second among active rushers in yards and attempts, behind Frank Gore.
