"Any smoke alarm 10 years old or older should be replaced entirely as it may not function properly in the event of an emergency".
Daylight Saving Time starts at 2 a.m. local time Sunday morning. More often is better. Date each unit when is it installed and replace it after 10 years or sooner if it does not successfully sound the alarm when the test button is pressed.
Test smoke alarms once a month.
According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), roughly two-thirds of home fire deaths occur in homes with no smoke alarms.
A smoke alarm with a dead or missing battery is the same as having no smoke alarm at all. "Yet, so many people ignore their smoke and CO detectors".
Families should also develop and practice a home fire escape plan.
Place a smoke alarm on every level of your home, including the basement, in every bedroom and outside each sleeping area. As of February 2018, the Red Cross and partners have saved almost 350 lives and have installed more than 1 million free smoke alarms as part of this campaign.
"Also, we will install smoke alarms in homes particular in at risk populations". Replace the backup battery every year.
"If alarms have removable batteries, those batteries should be replaced", a press release from FASNY said Friday.
Remember, even alarms that are hard-wired into your home electrical system need to have their battery back-ups maintained in case of electrical power outage.
