One of India's most celebrated opening batsmen, Gambhir is returning to play for Delhi Daredevils after a gap of eight years. He led Kolkata Knight Riders to two IPL titles and a Champions League Twenty20 trophy win during his tenure between 2011 and 2017. "But he also a leader, so the appointment was an easy choice", he said.
Gautam Gambhir was forthright about Delhi Daredevils' chances under his captaincy and said that one person can not take a team to the trophy, especially in the IPL. "It will be good that I will be able to play in a good, peaceful and happy environment", Gambhir added.
The official jersey unveiling was done along with Gambhir's official confirmation as Delhi captain.
Amid all the speculations that the Indian global would be bought back by the Kolkata Knight Riders using their "Right to Match" card, the franchise simply snubbed their skipper. To get this responsibility is a way for me to give back to the sport in the city. He added, "Delhi has deserved a lot of success in the past which they have not so hopefully this is the year where they can achieve a lot of success". The potential of this group of players is huge and it is now up to us to turn that potential into consistent performances. He subsequently bagged by the Daredevils for the eleventh season. "That is exactly what happened with Kolkata Knight Riders and what we intend to do is with Daredevils", Gambhir said.
DD's chief executive Hemant Dua was bullish about Gambhir's aggressive style of captaincy aiding the team's charge towards glory after shelling out '2.8 crore for his services. You can only try and lead by example.
"Its not about price tag as its not in players hand". So can the narrative be any different his year? "If you play the IPL thinking about using it as a launchpad or a platform from where you can stage a comeback, then you can never succeed", Gambhir said. And it starts with me.
The 2018 IPL begins on April 7, but the Daredevils will kick off their campaign a day later against the Kings XI Punjab.
