White House declines to answer key questions about Porter timeline

The president seemed to defend the men on Twitter.

Senator Kirsten Gillibrand (D-N.Y.), who has called for Trump to resign over the allegations against him, drew a straight line between the president's on-record statements about Porter and many of these policies.

Kelly wrote a letter to White House employees following the incident to allay staff concerns, saying "we all take matters of domestic violence very seriously".

During the past week, one of the President's closest aides and secretary of staff, Rob Porter, delivered his letter of resignation after several accusations of conjugal violence by his former partners were made public. "Is there no such thing any longer as Due Process?"

During the White House press briefing on Monday, press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders was asked how people can handle classified information if they do not have a permanent security clearance. Despite reports and social media accounts documenting violence perpetrated mostly by white supremacists, and not anti-racism counter-protesters, Trump argued to consider actions on "both sides". The Daily Mail article reportedly read by Trump contains details of Porter's violence towards his ex-wife, and other women have since come forward.

Sen. Jeff Flake (R-Ariz.), a frequent Trump critic, said the president's response to the Porter scandal could impact "how we are viewed as Republicans in the next election".

Two of Porter's ex-wives have alleged he verbally and physically abused them.

A number of West Wing aides were shaken by Kelly's handling of the Porter accusations, according to one official.

The White House sent senior advisers out to each of the five Sunday news shows this weekend in a desperate attempt to mitigate the damage from Trump's embrace of Porter, and his own history of abuse.

"The President tells me he learned when the rest of us did, the pictures, the police reports, the information provided to the Federal Bureau of Investigation".

"The president tells me he learned when the rest of us did", she said, "the pictures, the police reports, the information provided to the Federal Bureau of Investigation, we're all trying to process that". "He said very strongly yesterday that he's innocent", Trump said.

"There's no tolerance in this White House, no place in America for domestic abuse", Pence said.

At first, White House officials rallied around Porter, who described the allegations as false and "vile claims". "Some are true and some are false", Trump posted online.

As the aftershocks of the accusations against Porter reverberated for a sixth day, Trump stayed out of sight on a rainy Sunday in Washington.

The words "mere allegation" and "falsely accused" meant to imply that I am a liar.

Sorensen said he resigned to avoid distraction for the White House.

Rob Porter's ex-wife Colbie Holderness is pictured in a photo from 2005, when she says Porter gave her a black eye on an Italy trip. "Those of us who have the privilege of knowing him are better people because of it", she said.
