The Weinstein Company sale is likely off

NY state sued Harvey Weinstein, his brother and their production company on Sunday for failing to protect employees from years of his alleged sexual misconduct despite multiple complaints from staff.

"You don't know what I can do", he allegedly said.

The attorney general's office stated that the decision to bring the lawsuit was partly in response to the current sale of the film company.

Schneiderman said that, despite dozens of complaints of abuse and coercion, the company's HR department had "not once launched a formal investigation into any of the complaints of discrimination, harassment and abuse".

Representatives for The Weinstein Company and Bob Weinstein could not be reached over the weekend to discuss the lawsuit, though Harvey Weinstein's attorney Ben Brafman said that numerous allegations against his client are "without merit". In addition to the removal of Glasser and other board members, the attorney general called for adequate compensation to the sexual harassment victims and for stronger employee protections moving forward.

Weinstein's lawyer poured cold water on the lawsuit and presented his 65-year-old client as a supporter of women's career advancement.

Weinstein was sacked by the film company a year ago.

Weinstein, who faces a wave of sexual assault claims stretching back to the 1970s, was ousted from his studio in October 2017 after the New York Times and the New Yorker magazine published accounts in which women accused him of sexual harassment and rape.

"If the objective of the inquiry is to encourage reform throughout the film industry, Mr. Weinstein will embrace the investigation". Actress Dominique Huett claimed Weinstein performed an act on himself in front of her and then on her in 2010.

"Any sale of The Weinstein Company must ensure that victims will be compensated, employees will be protected going forward, and that neither perpetrators nor enablers will be unjustly enriched", Schneiderman said in a news release.

Schneiderman said he believed the potential purchasers of the firm would now take into account "the facts we have alleged and now understand they have more on their hands than they initially realized".

"We obtained a form of Mr. Weinstein's personnel file; we were told that the physical personnel file had gone missing, which is another issue of concern to us", Schneiderman said.

Attempts to reach Robert Weinstein or The Weinstein Company spokespersons were unsuccessful. The company's board of directors on Sunday made the announcement that Harvey had been fired from the company he co-created.

What do you think of Eric Schneiderman's lawsuit against the Weinstein Company?

"The company's management was complicit in this pattern of misconduct", Mr Schneiderman said.
