Apple's HomePod gets a teardown: Two key takeaways

Unlike the Home Max or the Sonos One, the HomePod doesn't offer stereo pairing, or Sonos-style multi-room capability. yet. It's also been lauded for its easy setup process and lovely design. Siri also has a smoother, more human voice on the HomePod than it does on the iPhone and avoids repeating the entire inquiry back like Google Assistant and Alexa, making for a more organic experience. If you've snagged one, chances are you don't know everything the HomePod can do.

The second reason you might want to reconsider the Apple HomePod is Siri itself.

AppleThe Apple HomePod went for sale on February 9, and includes an updates Siri voice assistant out of the box. Obviously, Siri is super for voice control of specific music or for suggesting playback based on an activity. On your iOS device, open up the app and tap on the arrowhead icon on the top left of your screen.

"HomePod is an Apple-only device, so it is much more limited in what it can control in terms of smart home gadgets", said Martin. This suggests that Apple did not try to artificially boost or modify the sound coming from the speakers, keeping it as neutral as possible and allowing the original recording to come through, which is a feature that audiophiles tend to prefer. If you're an Apple Music subscriber or an iTunes loyalist, you won't need to worry about any of this.

HomePod works best with an Apple Music subscription, but it is not required.

While smart speakers have been around for a few years at this point, the scene is gradually shifting more towards a focus on sound quality as the smart functionality has continued to improve. Not HomePod, however. Well, not directly. You get your phone close to the speaker, and set up begins. The HomePod is largely Apple's direct competitor to the Google Home Max. There you'll be able to instruct the smart speaker to let your listening history have a say on the device's recommendation or not.

And the HomePod won't play music from popular streaming services like Pandora or Spotify. It can't load the necessary Apple Music resources so it simply shows a blank white screen in the card, shown in the following screenshot. Before even getting to that, should you damage your HomePod, don't even bother trying to get it repaired yourself because the device isn't meant for DIY repairs.

After months of anticipation, Apple on Friday finally released its HomePod smart speaker.

Our friends over at iFixit did a teardown of Apple's HomePod that revealed a clever design that makes good use of tiny space, but it comes at a cost because everything is so tightly packed.

One of the best things about HomePod is that it automatically detects the environment in the room it is placed in and adjusts its audio settings appropriately.
