Airbus Halts Pratt A320Neo Shipments On Engine Issues


An IndiGo spokesperson said: "IndiGo confirms receiving the recommendations by Pratt & Whitney as well as the European Aviation Safety Agency with respect to the A320neo aircraft powered by PW1100G-JM engines".

The issue impacts a limited sub-population of engines and IndiGo had to ground three of its aircraft in the interim, it added. "We identified the potentially affected engines and got in touch with the customers". The GTF engine has demonstrated its promised ability to reduce fuel burn by 16 percent to reduce nitrogen oxide emissions by 50 percent to the regulatory standard, and to lower the noise footprint by 75 percent.

This is the second problem affecting Pratt & Whitney GTF engines since the start of their marketing, the first causing delays in 2017 in delivery of the A320neo, the re-engined version of Airbus' single-aisle plane.

Gregory Hayes, chief executive officer of UTC, told industry analysts on a conference call January 24 that Pratt & Whitney shipped 374 geared turbofan engines in 2017, the midpoint of its 350 to 400 target, and almost triple the number of shipments in 2016.

IndiGo, which is the largest operator of these planes in the country, and GoAir being the other one, have already grounded three such planes following an emergency airworthiness directive from the European Aviation Safety Agency or Easa on this issue over the weekend. United Technologies said Monday that approximately 55 engines delivered to the Airbus final assembly line awaiting installation on customer aircraft were also affected.

There are 43 engines installed on 32 aircraft affected by the latest problem, 21 aircraft have one engine with the modified configuration, and 11 aircraft have both engines with the new configuration.

Airbus and P&W are working in close cooperation and would be swiftly communicating on the way forward in relation to aircraft deliveries, the filing added. The rest of the fleet is safe to fly as per guidelines issued by DGCA and EASA, " it said.

Bobbi went on to say, however, that Pratt's competitors are having major problems with their newest engines as well.

The GTF (Geared Turbo Fan) is a new generation reactor which competes with the LEAP engines which are co-produced by the duo General Electric-Safran.

Also, a Pratt & Whitney representative reportedly has detailed the engine failures involve a seal in the high-pressure compressor (HPC) aft hub of a limited number of the total PW1100G engines in service.
