No details on Cathey's cause of death were provided by his family, but TMZ reported that he'd been fighting lung cancer.

TMZ broke the news on Friday, revealing that the Alabama native had passed away at home in NY while surrounded by his family and friends. The actor won an Emmy in 2015 for his role on "House of Cards", and was nominated in 2014 and 2016 for the guest actor category as well.

In 2017, Cathey starred in The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks alongside Oprah Winfrey.

Reg E Cathey's death was announced by The Wire creator David Simon. "Reg, your memory is a great blessing", he wrote.

Cathey passed away at the young age of 59 on Friday at his home in NYC.

On "The Wire", he played campaign manager Norman Wilson. Cathey also appeared in Jim Carrey and Cameron Diaz's The Mask and the 2015 Fantastic Four reboot. Brilliant actor, humorist, and friend!
