Suns to acquire PG Elfrid Payton from Magic for second-round pick

The Phoenix Suns have acquired Orlando Magic point guard Elfrid Payton in exchange for a second-round NBA Draft pick, ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski reported Thursday, the day of the NBA trade deadline for the 2017-18 season.

The Magic are getting the Suns' 2018 second-round pick. Payton is averaging 13.0 points, 6.3 assists, and 4.0 rebounds per game this season. He is shooting 52 percent from the field and 37 percent from three-point range.

The 23-year-old was the 10th overall selection of the 2014 draft and started 234 of 281 games played for the Magic.

Orlando clearly didn't want to pay Payton in restricted free agency next summer.

He now owns career averages of 11.1 points, 6.4 assists, 4.2 rebounds and 1.4 steals through 29.5 minutes per game.

Phoenix general manager Ryan McDonough was candid about the Suns putting a priority on acquiring a point guard at the trade deadline and beyond.

This trade may or may not mean the Suns are done experimenting with Booker at point guard. Still, his defense and penetrating ability could complement franchise player Devin Booker in the backcourt.
