Joaquin Phoenix set to play the Joker in origins film

News is beginning to circulate stating that Todd Phillips has targeted who he hopes to take on the role of the Clown Prince of Crime. Two different film Jokers is only a small step beyond that, and Phoenix would no doubt provide his own unique but twisted interpretation to go into a pantheon that already includes showstopping performances by Jack Nicholson and Heath Ledger. Initial reports indicated that Phillips movie would be executive produced by Martin Scorsese.

Phillips is signed on to direct and co-write the project alongside Scott Silver.

According to the outlet, Joaquin Phoenix is in talks to play the Joker in the upcoming film.

This shouldn't be too surprising given the Joker's stature as one of the best villains of fiction (as well as a box office draw considering what he and Harley Quinn did for the otherwise toxically received Suicide Squad). The 43-year-old, multiple Oscar-winning actor would be a big get after the rumored first choice of Leonardo DiCaprio didn't come to pass. This tone seems more aligned with Phoenix's acting as opposed to the direction Leto took the character in Suicide Squad. Phoenix has previously passed on playing both Lex Luthor in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and the titular role of Doctor Strange. I like to think it's not a big deal anymore, but I'll never forget sitting in a screening of Batman Begins and having a guy next to me say after the Joker's card was revealed: "and that leads into the Burton movie".
