Zidane faces fight to save his job as Real & Ronaldo fail again

Zinedine Zidane appealed for Real Madrid fans to try and stay "positive" despite the club's slim hopes of retaining their Primera Liga title taking another dent on Saturday with a 1-0 home loss to Villarreal.

Four minutes later, Cristiano Ronaldo went close to giving Real the lead when his free-kick from distance hit the top of the crossbar.

Zidane's side dominated the game but succumbed to an 87th minute strike from Pablo Fornals, who chipped over goalkeeper Keylor Navas on the rebound after a lightning quick counterattack, giving Villarreal their first ever win at the Bernabeu in 19 visits in all competitions.

Real Madrid is now 16 points behind Barcelona having played the same number of matches.

There have been a lot of jeers at the Santiago Bernabeu this season as Real Madrid have had a terrible start to this new season.

Zidane has enjoyed an extremely fruitful time as the Real Madrid manager, winning eight trophies in a little over two years at the helm at the Bernabeu, including the last two Champions League titles. "Within all the negative, we have to look for something positive and something we have". Every game we play we go out and say that there are possibilities. In football, there are bad runs and we will change that together as a team.

"But with transfers, as always, if you have a player that you want and he's available and he's going to bring a lot to your squad then it doesn't seem like a bad idea".

In the 60th minute, the visitors carved out another chance when Samu Castillejo picked out Carlos Bacca, who fired into the side-netting from close range. I can't criticise them.

"He seems fine to me and that's the important thing", said Zidane. Otherwise, we may just see Klopp making his way to Real Madrid soon, although it'll also depend on the German feeling the need to end his spell at Liverpool.

Zidane's side had failed to beat Valencia, Levante, Betis, Tottenham, Fuenlabrada, Barcelona and Numancia at home in 2017-18 and now Villarreal have become the third visiting team (after Barca and Betis) to leave their famous stadium with a win this term.
