Nike's Team USA Medal Stand Collection - what American Olympians in Pyeongchang, South Korea, will wear to the podium to receive their gold, silver or bronze medals in - appears to be tapping into the same retro / vintage vibe as other recently official outfitters of the 2018 Winter Games, including Burton, whose snowboarding uniforms took inspiration from the '70s-era US space program, and Ralph Lauren, who made the retro puffer jacket the centerpiece of Team USA's closing-ceremony ensemble. The group of 60-plus athletes, the largest ever sent from this country, will be expected to beat the record-equalling tally of four won in Sochi in 2014.

A medal haul of between four and 10 is projected at the Winter Olympics, which starts in South Korea on 9 February.

While the top end of that range...

Britain is not renowned as a winter sports nation.

UK Sport has more than doubled investment in winter sports since Sochi, putting up a total of £32m over the four years leading up to the 2018 Games.

The jackets have an American flag patch and Team USA patch on them.

There are also multiple medal opportunities across park and pipe and alpine.

Britain's other medals in Russian Federation were won by the men's curling squad, with silver and bronze medals for the women's curling team and Jenny Jones bronze in the snowboard slopestyle.

In the message to Unification Minister Cho Myoung-gyon from his high-level inter-Korean talks counterpart Ri Son-gwon, the North also said it will later propose dates for working-level talks on its participation in the PyeongChang Olympics, the ministry said.

Skier Menna Fitzpatrick and snowboarders Owen Pick and Ben Moore are other contenders while Gallagher is still awaiting selection via an International Paralympic Committee wildcard as she hopes to mount a successful title defence.

The medal target announcement was made at the Korean Cultural Centre UK in central London.
