Al Ahli take on Al Batin in the Saudi Pro League, which will be the first game that a woman can watch from inside the King Abdullah Sports City stadium. On Friday evening, women will be able to attend a match of the country's popular professional soccer league.

"Today, you brought happiness to every Saudi family and woman who attended the first game", said Reema Bandar Al-Saud, a deputy at the General Sports Authority and part of the Saudi Royal family.

The Riyadh match also has a designated gender-segregated seating plan, to keep in line with the kingdom's strict rules surrounding male and female mixing.

Saudi Arabian women have been kicking tyres and nodding knowingly at the kingdom's first vehicle exhibition aimed at females.

She said: 'Speak up, that is the only way to bring awareness and change things in Saudi Arabia'.

Basketball club Al Ittihad tweeted their thanks to their female fans' support.

The announcement that women would be granted the right to drive in Saudi Arabia was made in September past year by King Salman.

The showroom was opened in a shopping mall in the western Red Sea port of Jeddah, five months after King Salman's decision to allow women to drive. Come June, women will be allowed to drive in the kingdom, and sporting events for women are on the rise.

The programme is primarily focused on diversifying the country's economy away from its unsustainable reliance on oil exports.

On the occasion, Bahrain's police band performed Saudi national anthem which was followed by a parade.
