United Kingdom is partnering with the Lexington-Fayette Urban County Government to host a celebration of the life of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. on Monday.
"Pastor Cleaver will be our guest speaker, and we'll be giving out an award this year to a pastor for years of faithful service". A dessert reception will follow the service.
New Damascus Baptist Church and Rickards Chapel will have a joint service honoring King at 3 p.m. Sunday at New Damascus Baptist, which is on Damascus Church Road off N.C. 115 in North Wilkesboro.
This quote comes from Dr. King's "Our God is Marching On" speech, delivered March 25, 1965, in Montgomery, Ala.
At 9:30 a.m., registration will open.
The march will begin at Martin Luther King Jr. General admission will be $40.
Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., who would have been 89 on January 15, often quoted this passage of scripture to call our attention to a place of recognition for the manner that people of color were treated. A dramatic reading of the "Letter from Birmingham Jail" will be held along with a screening of the "I Have a Dream" speech. Admission will be $5 for all others.
And while a few speakers touched on how today's world is different than the one Martin Luther King dreamed of, there are still plenty of people who represent his spirit in Atlantic City.
The event is also a fundraiser for student scholarships, said Fred Banks, Denham Springs Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. The historic site will be the first national park honoring an African American.
She called on people to rally for social justice and educational equality and criticized people who are partying and daydreaming instead of studying. Essays should be between 300 and 500 words. At 10 a.m., the group will march to the city's celebration. (See story and photos on the winners in the Monday Journal.) The recipients were selected based on essays they wrote explaining how King's principles impacted their lives. The program will recognize high school nominees and award eight scholarship winners.

Tickets are $12 and may be purchased from any Men In Christ member or bought at the door.
The school district is allowing parents to keep their children home without penalty and many school bands will still be participating in Collier County's MLK Day celebration.
