Lexus vehicles to feature Amazon Alexa

This will enable the assistant to work with its newest infotainment platforms. Other models will also get Alexa support beginning in 2019.

Toyota has announced plans to bring the Amazon Alexa virtual assistant to some of its Lexus and Toyota models later this year.

"Voice services are rapidly becoming more popular and through our integration with Amazon Alexa, Toyota and Lexus customers will soon be able to easily speak to Alexa in their cars while on-the-go", Toyota chief information officer Zack Hicks said in a statement.

Using Alexa in your auto is getting more ubiquitous. The company unveiled the LG Gram laptops, OLED and Super UHD LED TVs and even a Smart display powered by Google Assistant. They also announced the Smart ThinQ speaker which has Google Assistant built in.

A number of carmakers have introduced Amazon Alexa voice commands that can activate the locks and climate control on their cars, but Toyota is going a step further with Alexa integration by bringing Alexa into the auto. "It's still really day one for us in terms of what we can do with Alexa in the vehicle", said John Scumniotales, head of products for Alexa's automotive efforts, onstage at a CES event.

The service will also enable new features in the cars themselves, such the ability to start the engine remotely or lock the auto doors, by giving a command through another Alexa device in the home or elsewhere.

Alexa will appear in certain Toyota and Lexus models.
