The top-ranked diet for 2018 will make Oprah smile

Your New Year's resolution diet should be based on a well-balanced eating plan that fits your lifestyle, rather than a weird fad replete with food restrictions. Those who adhere to the Mediterranean Diet have a "high intake of extra virgin (cold pressed) olive oil, vegetables including leafy green vegetables, fruits, cereals, nuts and pulses/legumes, moderate intakes of fish and other meats, dairy products and red wine, and low intakes of eggs and candies", according to the US National Library of Medicine National Institutes of Health. It based the rankings on input from an expert panel of the country's top nutritionists, dietary consultants, and doctors who specialize in heart health, weight loss, and diabetes.

That's according to U.S. News & World Report's best diet rankings for 2018.

Registered dietitian Abbey Sharp told Daily Mail Online the findings are no surprise - and should encourage people to avoid restrictive "cleanse" diets, which ultimately tend to lead to weight gain.

Both the DASH and Mediterranean diets are relatively easy to follow, too, Haupt said. It is also easy and even joyful to follow. "You eat tofu, quinoa, tons of produce, and other vegetarian favorites, but you're also allowed to occasionally eat meat and fish". But just like Keto even Whole30 was placed at the bottom.

The DASH diet was created to help people lower their high blood pressure, and it's characterized by a mix of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean protein and low-fat dairy. It held its No. 1 spot for best weight-loss diets, fast weight-loss diets and best commercial diets.

The MIND-a mix of DASH and the Mediterranean diet-is supposed to help protect the brain and prevent Alzheimer's disease, though much more research is needed to determine whether it really helps curb brain decline.

This, according to the diet, can be done in just 14 days.

Sharp explains the things that those diets eliminate are crucial for our health.


The Mediterranean diet mimics the eating habits of that region, with an emphasis on fish and seafood, leafy greens, nuts and legumes, and low in red meat, carbs like sugar, and saturated fat.

"It's tasty, it's sensible, nutritionally sound, and there's great research that it can help ward off or control a whole host of chronic diseases", Angela Haupt, assistant managing editor of health at U.S. News & World Report, said of the Mediterranean Diet.

"The keto diet is just not sustainable over the long term", she said.

"This is especially gratifying now that new research underscores the significant blood-pressure lowering effects of a reduced intake of sodium in combination with the DASH diet".

Over time, their systolic blood pressure (the top number in a blood pressure reading) could drop by eight to 14 points, which significantly reduces the risk of cardiovascular disease. You can have high blood pressure for years before symptoms start to arise, and this can damage your body.

Having high blood pressure, or hypertension, is a risk factor.

"Our results add to the evidence that dietary interventions can be as effective as - or more effective than - antihypertensive drugs in those at highest risk for high blood pressure, and should be a routine first-line treatment option for such individuals".

Diet inclines in 2018 will concentrate on advancing health from the back to front, as indicated by U.S. News and World Report.
