Bitcoin makes muted stock exchange debut at Dollars 15000

The Chicago Board Options Exchange (CBOE)'s website became unavailable just as it launched its first bitcoin futures contracts at 6 p.m. EST on Sunday.

On the US -based Bitfinex exchange, Bitcoin was at $13,951.00 by 08:12 AM ET (13:12 GMT), after going as low as $12,748.00 earlier.

Bitcoin January futures were at $15,940, with 398 contracts traded, after having opened at $15,460.

Another large futures exchange, the Chicago Mercantile Exchange, will start trading its own futures on December 18 but will use a composite of several bitcoin prices across a handful of exchanges.

The price of a bitcoin has soared since beginning the year below $1,000, hitting a peak of more than $16,858 December 7 on the bitcoin exchange Coindesk. As of 3 p.m. Sunday, a bitcoin was quoted at $15,375 on the bitcoin exchange Coindesk.


Cryptocurrency Bitcoin made its debut on a major bourse today, opening at United States dollars 15,000 per unit at the Chicago board options exchange.

Futures are a type of contract in which a buyer and a seller agree on a price for a particular item to be delivered on a certain date in the future, hence the name.

The Wall Street Journal reported Sunday that JPMorgan Chase, Bank of America Merrill Lynch, Citigroup and Royal Bank of Canada will not be offering their customers access to bitcoin futures when they first go live amid concerns over the digital currency's wild volatility.

Irrespective of the effects futures trading may have on the price of bitcoin going forward, others continue to warn that bitcoin is in the middle of a bubble that will eventually come crashing down.
