A student at a New Mexico high school says he huddled in a locked classroom as a shooter opened fire and killed two classmates.

All schools in town closed for the day, but authorities said there were no other credible threats to students at the high school or other schools in the neighbouring communities of Bloomfield or Farmington.

Christesen said the shooter also died, but it is unknown whether the suspect was among the three confirmed deaths. The New Mexico State Police tweeted that no other injuries were reported, but the Navajo Nation Office of the President and Vice President stated 15 others were hurt in the incident.

Families of the shooting victims have already been notified, Bryce Current, an official with the San Juan Sheriff's Office told reporters. Nearby schools in the area have also been put on a preventative lockdown, AP reported. Christesen did not say if the dead included the shooter.

Aztec High School is about 180 miles northwest of Albuquerque, New Mexico.

"We all know each other in San Juan County", she added.
