Philippe Coutinho scores hat-trick as Liverpool routs Spartak Moscow

Philippe Coutinho, wearing the armband as Jordan Henderson watched on from the bench, starred with his first hat-trick for the club, while Sadio Mane notched a brace and Roberto Firmino and Mohamed Salah shared one apiece.

On this evidence, the group runners-up, including Real Madrid and Bayern Munich, could do worse than to avoid Liverpool in Monday's last-16 draw.

The score was nearly doubled a minute later thanks to a classic counter-press, as Salah fed Roberto Firmino with a lovely back-heel, but the Brazilian's risky cross was cleared.

Coutinho completed his hat-trick with a deflected shot, and Mane added the sixth before Salah completed the rout.

With the Merseyside Derby in mind subs rolled on for Liverpool as they shifted into second gear, controlling much of the possession.

After several underwhelming seasons in Europe's elite competition, the Premier League will be strongly represented in the last 16 with Liverpool joining Manchester City, Manchester United, Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur in the knockout phase.

Ironically, the Reds found themselves up 3-0 at halftime against their Russian opponents; the same scoreline as their last European fixture against Sevilla before the La Liga side roared back to take a share of the spoils with three goals of their own in the second half. Milner delivered an inviting cross for Mane to thump home on the volley less than two minutes into the second half. "They nearly played like they were afraid of Liverpool".

Liverpool have now scored the most Champions League group-stage goals of any English team in history. Salah sat down the defender in his face, and smashed home on his weak foot to collect his 12th goal in 11 games to round off the scoring on an emphatic night for Liverpool.

Liverpool can secure a first place finish in their group with a win tonight.
