Star: Johnny Hallyday is seen in this picture from September. I write these words without believing them. My man is no longer with us.

Relatively unknown outside of France, the singer sold more than 100 million records and starred in a number of films since his career flourished in 1960.

And the former Marseille forward joined the world in paying homage to the Elvis of France whose music was influenced by America's Elvis Presley.

Born Jean-Philippe Smet in Paris on June 15, 1943, he borrowed the name of cousin's American boyfriend, Lee Halliday, when he made a decision to begin his rock career after discovering Elvis as a teenager.

Hallyday also had a moderately successful acting career working with celebrated French directors including Jean-Luc Godard. "When the good days of rock "n" roll were over, the public could have abandoned him but a new life for him began".

Hallyday was for many years married to French singer Sylvie Vartan and the two were considered a musical power couple.
