The closure was between the 101 Freeway to the north and the 10 Freeway to the south. The Skirball Fire is in mostly residential areas causing evacuation, and UCLA students were given the option to go to class.
Fire crews responded to the brush fire dubbed the Creek Fire shortly before 4 a.m. and requested structure protection near Kagel Canyon. The fire is northeast of the Getty Center and east of the San Diego Freeway.
Local news affiliate NBC4 reported Wednesday that the estate, located on a vineyard outside of Los Angeles and across the 405 freeway from the Getty Museum, was "burning down".
About 125 firefighters and two helicopters were at the scene battling the blaze, Stewart said. Meanwhile, other major wildfires were burning in other parts of the Southland, including the 65,000-acre Thomas fire in Ventura County and the 7,000-acre Rye Fire in the Santa Clarita area.
By 1 p.m. the northbound lanes of the 405 had also been reopened except for two of the slow lanes near the fire scene which are closed because of the staging of firefighting equipment.
"We expect to be out here all week fighting and containing this fire", Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti said.
Residents who had to evacuate from their homes described tense moments as the fires rapidly approached. The fire burned more than 11,000 acres by Wednesday morning and had destroyed an estimated 30 homes, KTVU-TV reported.
"This has only just begun", he said Tuesday. Firefighters worked against high winds, hampering their ability to contain the fires.
More than 600 firefighters battled the blaze amid strong Santa Ana winds, some gusting at 70 miles per hour. Los Angeles Mission College's Main Campus at 13356 Eldridge Ave. and the East Campus at 12890 Harding St., both in Sylmar, were closed for the day, but there was no immediate word if classes would resume today.
