Ingress Prime will build upon the foundation of its forebear, bringing with it a completely redesigned user interface and sound design. The game's now slated for a 2018 release. However, for some reasons, the re-launch of the game has now slipped into 2018, a very busy year for Niantic, as the company plans to release yet another AR game based on the Harry Potter franchise.
When playing Ingress, users choose one of two teams - The Enlightened and The Resistance - and they wander the real world looking for Portals to capture.
According to Niantic CEO John Hanke, Pokemon Go stole focus away from Ingress once the game went big; now that time has passed, the team is now ready to reward players of the Ingress community by offering "a modern, attractive version of the game". Although this game was extremely popular back to its days, by the time the release of Pokemon Go was around, it was mostly forgotten.
Though Ingress Prime contains many new enhancements, current players ("Agents") will keep their in-game progress. It's unclear if Ingress Prime or the Harry Potter game will arrive first, but either way, Niantic is primed for another big year in 2018. New features integrate state-of-the-art augmented reality technology leveraging smartphone cameras to immerse players in the sci-fi world of Ingress.
In addition, an anime series set in the Ingress world is being developed. This not only means that players who own the original Ingress will be updated to the new version, it also means that all of their previous progression will be left intact, including their level and any owned items.
Ingress Prime will launch on iOS and Android devices in 2018, kicking off a massive new story arc, beginning a brand new narrative for Agents worldwide.
