Couple charged with abuse after allegedly burning baby in microwave

A couple in Missouri, Derick Boyce-Slezak, and Mikala Boyce-Slezak are now in the process of facing child abuse charges for allegedly putting their four-month-old son into a microwave in April earlier this year.

The couple, from Park Hills, took their child to the Cardinal-Glennon Hospital Emergency Room in April for a rash on his face, and the so-called "rash" was determined to be a second-degree burn. Then he put the child in the microwave and immediately pressed the button to start it and left the baby for a while inside. According to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, the infant suffered subdural hematoma, a brain injury caused by a fracture in the skull.

At the hospital, Derick and Mikala Boyce-Slezak first claimed the burns were caused by a cleaning agent, the documents say.

According to court documents, Derick Boyce-Slezak, 22, and Mikala Boyce-Slezak, 22, each face a felony charge of abuse or neglect of a child.

Mikala pleaded the fifth at the hearing and Derick didn't testify.

Then an individual with the Children's Division testified that Mikala had previously stated she meant to testify that the head wounds were a result of Derick dropping the infant while trying to imitate what he saw on a television commercial.

Derick was reported to have not testified during the hearing. The employee also stated that the mother had claimed she had reason to believe Derick Boyce-Slezack had placed the infant in the microwave.

The Daily Journal reported that additional testimony from the employee stated that the baby had another fracture that was later found.

Of note, Derick and Mikala Boyce-Slezak also had a baby girl in January 2016 but waived custody of the girl shortly after she was born.

The pair are being held at St. Francois County Jail on bail set at half a million dollars.
