Detroit Lions sign former Colts DE Dwight Freeney from Seahawks

Just claimed off waivers Wednesday, it seems highly unlikely Freeney will be ready to suit up after not even a single walk-through with his new team, but perhaps he can get in some snaps in obvious passing situations. We're a little bit deeper there.

In a corresponding move, the Lions waived wide receiver Jace Billingsley. We hated to do it, but we had to do something and that's where it happened.

The veteran pass rusher played in three games, accounting for the same number of sacks, including two against the Washington Redskins.

The 37-year-old had three sacks on the year before his release.

Freeney's departure leaves the Seahawks with 10 defensive linemen, which is what Carroll was alluding to when he noted the team's depth there.

Freeney was signed in late October by the Seattle Seahawks to boost Seattle's pass rush after Cliff Avril was lost to a neck injury earlier in the season.

Lions team president Rod Wood said on WJR radio that Freeney will play as soon as he's ready. Freeney recorded a sack in his Seahawks debut, then two more the following week.

He will hope to get more opportunities for the Lions, a team that ranks 20th in the National Football League in sacks. "There's no question that you miss stuff because he's such a tremendous guy, but we just had to do something".

Meanwhile, the Seahawks filled the roster spot by adding WR David Moore, a 7th-round draft pick who was on the practice squad. "There is cap concerns and all kind of issues that we are dealing with right now".
