Woman techie dies after spurned lover sets her on fire in Chennai

A 21-year-old woman engineer was killed while her family members are battling burns, after they were set on fire in Chennai by a classmate of hers, who had been stalking her for over a month.

The woman in the incident succumbed to her injuries, while the mother and sister are being examined in a hospital. Indhuja and her family were initially reluctant to open the door, but Aakash persisted, claiming he only wanted to speak to Indhuja for a few minutes. He started stalking her after she rejected him and the situation got so bad that Induja had to stop going to work, the report added. Induja's parents were averse to Akash meeting her. The accused has been arrested, NDTV reported on Tuesday.

The incident occurred on Monday night in South Chennai's Velachery. "In a fit of rage he took out a bottle of kerosene and set her on fire and tried to escape when the neighbours caught him and handed him over to the police", said a police source.

Other reports, however, claim that there had been an altercation between Indhuja and the stalker first, after which he poured the petrol on her.

The mother has sustained 49 per cent burn injuries, while her daughter has 23 per cent.

On hearing their screams, the neighbours rushed to the victim's house. While Akash dropped out, Induja went on to complete her graduation course in engineering and land a job in an IT firm in the city.

Sindhuja's father Shanmugam, 48, is working in Dubai. As per the witnesses present at the spot, the hospital ambulance took nearly 40 minutes to reach the residence after receiving a call from a neighbour.
