US rap star Eminem opened the show with a performance of his new song "Walk on Water", with Skylar Grey standing in for Beyonce to sing the other part in the duet.

Canadian teen singer Shawn Mendes on Sunday (early yesterday) won best artist and best song at the MTV Europe Music Awards (EMA) in London, pipping heavyweight competitors such as Taylor Swift, Miley Cyrus and Ed Sheeran. Jared Leto was involved in an awkward encounter with MC Grindah at the MTV EMAs when the TV star jokingly called the Hollywood actor Jay Leno.

The grime star, 24, delivered a massive rendition of "Big For Your Boots" at the SSE Arena Wembley ceremony, which saw him performing in a police vehicle.

Coldplay was named best rock act, while the best-alternative prize went to Thirty Seconds to Mars.

Luckily, the rest of his night was a lot more successful, as he gave a storming performance and picked up the award for Best UK and Ireland Act.

Irish band U2 collected MTV's Global Icon gong, previously awarded to Queen, Whitney Houston and Eminem.

Other winners included Camila Cabello, who took the "Best Pop", and rapper Kendrick Lamar won "Best Video" for "Humble".

Source Music said the six-member act became the first girl group to receive the award since its inception in 2013, beating K-pop rivals such as Wanna One, Highlight, Mamamoo and Seventeen.

British singer and actress Rita Ora took charge of the ceremony and also turned in a popular stage performance.
