Ex-Liverpool striker Fernando Torres wants to be reunited with Benitez

Newcastle and Southampton have been placed on red alert as Fernando Torres wants to return to the Premier League.

Southampton are also apparently interested in the Spanish striker.

Rafa Benitez and Mauricio Pellegrino are open to the prospect of welcoming Torres to England.

Newcastle have made a positive start to life back in the Premier League and now sit 11th in the standings but Benitez has made it very clear that he wants reinforcements at St James' Park.

Past year he returned to Atletico Madrid, where he began his career. It was this prolific form that made Liverpool swoop for him in 2007, which was at the time was their most expensive signing in their history.

The Spaniard has always had a keen eye for goal and clearly has a good working relationship with Rafa Benitez as the pair have worked together at both Liverpool and Chelsea.

Benitez, who left Chelsea at the end of the season, could not keep Newcastle in the Premier League after being appointed near the end of the 2015/16 campaign. He scored 65 goals in 102 games.

Torres endured a torrid time in England's top tier at Chelsea following his big £50m move from Liverpool. Before that happens though, he wants to play as much as he can for the remainder of this season, something that isn't likely at Atletico.

He joined Atletico on a permanent in the summer 2016 and played 45 times for them in all competitions last season.

Newcastle United fans have been calling for Mike Ashley to sell the club for a very long time so this news will be music to their ears.
