The deceased have been identified as driver Doreal Rogers, 20; front-seat passenger Alesia Maddox, 20; and Armonie Maddox and Ervin Johnson, both 18, who were in the back.
The preliminary investigation determined a 2006 Buick sport-utility vehicle was travelling in the left lane at an unspecified high rate of speed, passing other traffic, when the driver lost control at approximately 1:05 a.m., crossed three lanes and struck the bridge, Michigan State Police said. None of the adult victims, ages 18 to 25, were wearing seatbelts, state police say. They were not buckled up. Two men were ejected and found dead on the interstate and two women were found dead inside the SUV.
The back two passengers, 18-year-old Armonie Maddox and 18-year-old Ervin Johnson were ejected from the auto and both died. They were all Detroit residents. He was buckled into a vehicle seat and suffered only minor injuries.
"The baby was in the auto seat", a crash witness told WXYZ. "And I can tell you from experience people fly down this stretch going 80 miles per hour, don't think about it".
He says the SUV swerved across three lanes then hit the 8 Mile overpass bridge. Next thing I knew it hit the wall, spinned outta control.
Investigators say the four victims are all from Detroit.
Police suspect speed was a factor in the crash but are still working to determine the exact cause. Lt. Shaw says he will be sent home with family.
