Rahul to take charge as Congress president soon: Sonia Gandhi

Trying to corner Mr Gandhi on the development plank, Union minister Ravi Shankar Prasad said that the Congress did everything when it was in power at the Centre to ensure that the Sardar Sarovar project was not completed. Adityanath also took a jibe at Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi saying "Samjho jahan Rahul Gandhi prachaar karne chale gaye, wahan Congress ki haar pakki (If Rahul Gandhi goes to campaign somewhere, Congress is sure to lose)", as per an Indian Express report.

Rahul is set to take over as Congress chief from his mother after Diwali, sources said. Sonia attended the release of former President Pranab Mukherjee's book The Coalition Years along with son Rahul on Friday.

In the run up of the next assembly elections in Gujarat, Rahul Gandhi has been targeting Prime Minister Modi and the BJP in his rallies. Rahul, who was also present at the event, refused to speak on the development. During a recent overseas tour, Rahul while replying to a querry, had consented on becoming the Congress president.

Virtually gasping for survival in the country's politically most vibrant state, UP Congress Committee (UPCC) sees a hope of reviving the outfit by elevating Rahul Gandhi as the party's national president.


Several Congress leaders have raised their voices from time to time for making Rahul the party president but they were silenced by their colleagues. "But, the then leadership of Congress didn't pay heed to Gandhi's advice".

"Today, there are only two Congress Lok Sabha Members from Uttar Pradesh, but in 2019 there won't be a single Congress MP in the Lok Sabha". The Congress always emerges back; whenever people can think that they can finish it off, the Congress always emerges successfully.

The political environment in Gujarat is heating up due to the upcoming assembly elections. The last Congress government in Gujarat was led by Chhabildas Mehta from February 17, 1994 to March 13, 1995.
