And recently, a "configuration issue " allowed Fortnite players on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One compete with each other (before the feature was swiftly disabled).
"I have a little dashboard I go to and I can see all the games [and] where they are in getting approvals in the pipeline", he continued. Spencer won't comment on Sony's motivation, but he says that cross-platform play is better for gamers and if it's better for gamers, that's what game developers and console makers should be aiming for.
Players of games like Rocket League and Minecraft can already enjoy cross-platform play across Switch, Xbox One, and Steam. "It plays all the same games", said Xbox's Phil Spencer to GameSpot at the Brazil Game Show.
"There's some stuff we're going to talk about in that space in terms of how compatibility's going to work on [Xbox One] X specifically that I think people will find pretty interesting", he said. At E3, Microsoft and Nintendo announced a partnership for Minecraft cross-play between Xbox and Nintendo Switch, but Sony has held out. Users also get a full add-on download code of the Minecraft Explorer's pack, three months of Xbox Live Gold, and a one month trial of the Xbox Game Pass.
"I think people look at [cross-play] and say is it better for gamers".
But Microsoft also notes that customers who preorder Xbox One X at their local Microsoft Store can pick up their console right at 9 p.m. PT, Monday, November 6/midnight ET, Tuesday, November 7, from the store where they preordered.
