Southwest Airlines to Launch Hawaii Service in 2018

Boeing and Southwest must wait for FAA approval for long over-the-water passenger flights for the 737 Max before it can begin service.

The Honolulu Star-Advertiser reports that the Dallas-based airline made the announcement on Tuesday, and its officials say it will soon begin the public application process to obtain the Federal Aviation Administration certification that allows aircraft to operate to and from the mainland and Hawaii.

It won't be long before you'll be able to book a Southwest Airlines flight to Hawaii.

That statement is probably a reference to something called the Southwest Effect - a concept introduced in the 1990s in a Transportation Department analysis of domestic airline competition.

The airline said service details will be announced in the future.

In part, Southwest is more bullish on Hawaii because it is locked in a battle with Alaska Airlines over which can fly more leisure travelers in the state. We're thrilled to share our intention to bring our world-famous hospitality and value to the Hawaiian Islands! Southwest now serves 10 airports in California, including Los Angeles International, Burbank, Long Beach, Orange County, Ontario and San Diego in Southern California. "Hawaii is an important place for Southwest Airlines because so many people count on us to take them everywhere they want to go reliably and affordably". So far, Southwest had done that by adding new flights from California to popular Mexico beach destinations, including Puerto Vallarta and Cabo San Lucas. The airline made the announcement during a company gathering in Southern California. But Southwest, which announced plans for the service Wednesday, said it will start selling tickets for the service next year.
