Reports started coming in early Wednesday morning and peaked at around 11:00am ET.
The outage map on Down Detector's website shows that the issues are not limited to the U.S.
Just after 11:00am EST, parts of the US, mostly the East and West Coasts, and Europe starting suffering Facebook outages. In some cases, users were simply unable to use certain basic functions, such as posting on either Facebook or Instagram.
Nearly 90 per cent of problems on Facebook in the United Kingdom were reported as total blackouts or users being unable to log in, while on Instagram the core issue was with its news feed. "We're working to get things back to normal as quickly as possible", a Facebook spokesperson said in a statement.
The issue is a global one with people suffering social media downtime in South America, parts of Asia and Europe.
A few of my colleagues at the Daily Dot are experiencing several different issues with both personal account pages and Facebook's Business Manager service.
