His dinked penalty and 20-yard shot put the Dutch 2-0 up early on against Sweden on Tuesday night but the Netherlands needed to win by seven clear goals to overtake Sweden and take second place.

The 33-year-old scored a double in the Holland's 2-0 win over Sweden this evening, however his global career ended on a low note as they missed out on World Cup qualification.

Bayern Munich, team played a star footballer 96 times in national Jersey scored 37 goals.

The Sweden centre-back hooked a clearance into his own arm, and Robben fortuitously scuffed the spot kick past Robin Olsen with a scuffed panenka.

"I wanted to show one more time all the things that I can do", Robben said.

Missing out on the World Cup caps a remarkable demise for the Netherlands, who were runners-up to Spain at the 2010 tournament in South Africa, and third in Brazil in 2014, with Robben again in the side, in a semi-final defeat by Argentina.

Having also missed out on a place at the Euro 2016, it is the second straight major tournament that the Oranje have failed to qualify for - the first time that this has happened for just over 30 years.

Nearly immediately after full time, reports began to emerge that the Oranje would suffer a second blow of the night with the news that Robben was set to step back from worldwide football.
