Nigerian thrashed in Delhi for alleged theft attempt

A case filed by a resident after the incident reportedly claimed that the Nigerian was involved in a theft and had been wounded after falling down the stairs.

A mob in south Delhi is seen punching, kicking and beating with sticks a Nigerian man tied to a lamp post, in videos shot during the brutal assault last month after he was accused of burglary.

A second video shows an attacker holding his legs and another man hitting with a stick.

Summary: Police have arrested the Nigerian national, identified as Ahmed, after he was handed over by the locals.

African nationals have been attacked in New Delhi and the adjoining areas in the past as well.

The Nigerian man was accused of theft by locals in the area who sought to thrashing him before the police reached the spot, according to CNN-News18 news channel. The Nigerian national was, after all, caught trying to rob a house; therefore, it seems only fair that a mob did with him what it saw fit. The incident has occurred on 24th September in Malviya Nagar in South Delhi. The incident was reported to Malviya Nagar police.

The people who caught him told the police that the Nigerian man fell down while he was trying to flee by crossing the fence. He was produced before a court and sent to jail. Five people were arrested for the attacks.

After the video surfaced, the police said action would be taken against the attackers.

The officer also said that there was no racial basis for his beating, he was beaten up only because of theft suspicion.
