Gary Andersen out as OSU head football coach

Oregon State owed him $883,332 for the rest of this season, $2.75 million for 2018, $2.85 million for 2019, $2.95 million for 2020 and $3.05 million for 2021.

The Beavers now have a 1-5 record for the season with no wins in Pac-12 Conference play. After rushing up the coaching ranks with an 11-win season in his second year with Wisconsin, Andersen headed west to fill the spot left vacant by Mike Riley, with Beavers fans believing he could work similar magic. It is about teaching and putting young men in a position to succeed on and off the field. Cornerbacks coach Cory Hall has been named interim head coach for the rest of the season.

Oregon State athletic director Scott Barnes also indicated his role is to support the current coaching staff, and to relay the message to Oregon State recruits that a future in Corvallis remains a desirable future destination.

Andersen went 19-7 in two seasons at Wisconsin before leaving for Oregon State, making his struggles in the Pac-12 even more confounding.

The Beavers have had a nightmarish start to the season. They beat Portland State, an FCS team, by three points, and their five losses to Colorado State, Minnesota, Washington State, Washington and USC have come by an average of 31.4 points.

After a 48-14 home loss to Minnesota on September 9, Andersen went public with his frustration over how things were going early in the season. Overall, Andersen has a 7-23 record with the team. "His decision is made for the right reasons and values, and it speaks volumes about the kind of honorable person that Gary Andersen".

Oregon State produced a Heisman Trophy victor, Terry Baker, in 1962 and went to the Rose Bowl in the 1964 season.

Andersen made a fairly surprising move from Wisconsin to Oregon State in 2014. The Beavers will be looking to recapture that magic with whoever the next coach is.

Perhaps the best moment of Andersen's tenure came at the expense of those rival Ducks.
