PM Modi to mark birthday by inaugurating world's second largest dam

"According to the Newspaper, More than 43,000 km out of the total 90,000 km Narmada canal network is still unfinished due to BJP government's failure", Gohil said.It was in June 2014 that the Narmada Control Authority gave nod to install gates which would increase the dam's height to 138 metre.

Meanwhile, the Union government will observer Modi's birthday as "Seva Diwas (day of service)" across the nation and carry out a range of activities including building twin pit toilets, "shramdaan" or voluntary work and sanitation drives.

This will be Modi's sixth visit in 2017 to his home state where Assembly elections are due by year-end. Nearly 56 years after the foundation stone for the dam was laid by the then PM Jawaharlal Nehru, it will be inaugurated on September 17. It is also the second biggest dam in the world after the Grand Coulee Dam in the United States.

The yatra that began over a fortnight ago would culminate at Kevadiya Colony with the prime minister dedicating the project to the nation.

The event will take place at Kevadia in Narmada district.

The Sardar Sarovar dam produces 4,141 crore units of electricity via its two power houses - river bed powerhouse and canal head powerhouse. One of the biggest challenges to construction of the dam came from the well known- Narmada Bachao Andolan (NBA) led by social activist Medha Patkar. In 1996, the construction work was suspended following a stay by the Supreme Court. "Within 20 days of becoming prime minister, Modi gave final approval to raise the height of the dam", Gujarat BJP spokesperson Bharat Pandya said here.

The saffron party has been blaming the opposition Congress for the project's delay.

"It is the best gift for him on his birthday, as he has worked tirelessly for the dam to bring water in the parched areas of the state", the Chief Minister said.

PM will then attend the closing ceremony of the Narmada Mahotsav, and address the gathering at Dabhoi.

The project has been mired in several controversies ever since its foundation stone was laid.

The ruling BJP has tried to encash on the mood towards the Narmada project in the state by holding a Narmada Rath Yatra across 8000 villages.
