The Rehabilitation Center at Hollywood Hills has evacuated this morning due to a prolonged power failure to the transformer which powered the facility's air conditioning system as a result of the hurricane. "Every facility that is charged with caring for patients must take every action and precaution to keep their patients safe - especially patients that are in poor health". Another 42 nursing homes are being checked by police as precaution, and another 18 people at a nearby health facility have also been evacuated. At least six people in Florida died of apparent carbon monoxide poisoning from generators, and a Tampa man died after the chain saw he was using to remove trees recoiled and cut his carotid artery.
Police evacuated 115 residents on Wednesday from the facility, whose air conditioning was cut by the storm.
Across the street from the stifling nursing home sat a fully air-conditioned hospital, Memorial Regional.
She said some of the 15,000 residents at Century Village were vulnerable and "we are concerned about their welfare". In Daytona Beach, one person died and three other were hospitalized after ingesting poisonous fumes from a gas generator.
"It's a sad event", Tomas Sanchez, the Hollywood Police Chief, told a news conference where he said an investigation was under way. "What we have been generally treating is dehydration, severe respiratory conditions and heat exhaustion".
The order followed the deaths of eight elderly people this week at a sweltering nursing home north of Miami that lost power. Rescue workers found a portable gasoline generator running inside the home.
Scott's statement said Florida's Agency for Health Care Administration and the Department of Children and Families have launched investigations. Not only are these retirees more physically vulnerable and in need of greater care, but they also, as the New York Times notes, lack family resources that can be so helpful in times of emergency. Phone calls to the nursing home went unanswered Wednesday morning.
On Tuesday, the lowest temperature in Hollywood was 26C, according to the US National Weather Service.
Florida utilities restored power to more residents on Saturday.
More than half of a large retirement community in Pembroke Pines, Florida, still had no electricity by Wednesday afternoon, leaving elderly residents stuck in rooms with no access to lifts.
Hollywood is located in southeast Florida between Miami and Fort Lauderdale.
