The intensity of the grenade blast killed a civic police volunteer and injured a home guard personnel, they said.
Anuj Sharma, Additional Director-General of Police (Law and Order), said: "We have convened a meeting with the D-G at Nabanna (state administration headquarters), and have made a decision to increase police patrolling in and around crowded places in Darjeeling".
Additional Director General (law and order) Anuj Sharma had said cases will be filed under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) against Gurung and other GJM leaders. The state police personnel rushed to the spot as the defeaning sound of the explosion shook the neighbourhood. We suspect the hands of GJM leaders Bimal Gurung, Praveen Subba and Prakash Gurung.
He wondered how the blast could take place as the entire Darjeeling region has been "fortified and turned into a garrison of sorts" and that it occurred only 200 metres from the police station.
The blast took place near the motor stand in the Darjeeling's Chowkbazar area.
"The Gorkha Janmukti Morcha demands that a probe be initiated, at the earliest, by a high level enquiry committee, comprising of NIA officials under the supervision of the Supreme Court of India, so that an unbiased investigations can be carried out into this heinous attempt to bring disrepute to the Gorkhaland movement and the leaders associated with it, and wilful attempts at causing unrest in peaceful Darjeeling". The Sadar Police Station is near to the blast site. It was led by Special Superintendent Ajay Prasad. Police are investigating the case.
Meanwhile Bimal Gurung has refuted allegations of his involvement in the blast. "In filing the FIR this early, without proper investigations, the Bengal government has revealed their own hidden agenda of entrapping the GJM leadership on another series of trumped up charges", Gurung wrote.
"We will never support any undemocratic means...we condemn the attempt at breaching peace in the Hills and request everyone not to be misled or scared", the statement said. Later the Government even attempted to link the GJM with Nepal Maoists. A forest Bunglow was set on fire at Badamtam near Lebong while a GJM party office was vandalized at Lebong last night.
