Yankees put RHP Tanaka on DL with shoulder inflammation

The Yankees placed Masahiro Tanaka on the 10-day disabled list for right shoulder inflammation, the team announced on Saturday. Rather, Tanaka was feeling more tired.

"We decided he needs a break".

It looked like the Yankees had a surplus of starting pitching less than two weeks ago.

Sabathia was placed on the 10-day DL prior to New York's 5-4 win over the Boston Red Sox on Friday night, retroactive to August 9. The Yankees are fortunate to have starting pitching depth, as NY added acquired Jaime Garcia and Sonny Gray before the trade deadline. Starter Jordan Montgomery was recalled from Triple-A to replace him.

Girardi said there is nothing structurally wrong with Tanaka.

Tanaka has struggled this season, going 8-10 with a 4.92 ERA and 141 strikeouts in 23 starts. Bryan Mitchell and Luis Cessa are options to slot in for Tanaka's rotation spot. He has eight starts where he allowed one run or less and seven where he allowed five or more. In his All-Star rookie season of 2014 he spent almost 11 weeks on it after he was diagnosed with a partially torn UCL in his elbow, but he did come back.

Tanaka won't throw for five days while doing strengthening exercises.

"Looking at myself in the mirror, I thought it would be hard to take the mound in my best condition so I talked to (management) about it", said Tanaka, who last went on the DL in April 2015 with right wrist tendinitis and a strained forearm.
