Per a report by National Football League insider Ian Rapoport, Murphy tore his ACL in Thursday's preseason game against the Baltimore Ravens.

He started vs. the Baltimore Ravens on Thursday night and played through several possessions in the first quarter.

NFL Network's Ian Rapoport and Mike Garafolo reported an initial MRI showed Murphy tore his ACL. "It's unfortunate, you know, just wrong place at the wrong time". The 26-year-old recorded a career-high nine sacks in 2016, trailing only Ryan Kerrigan's 11 among Washington defenders.

While Miami's front office and coaching staff will look to move forward without the rookie linebacker, the Redskins were already expecting Murphy to miss the first four games of the 2017 season. The grim diagnosis wipes out a 2017 campaign that was already going to be capped at 12 regular-season games.

The team signed free agent wide receiver Jamari Staples and placed LB Trent Murphy on their Reserve/Injured list.

In two seasons with the Cardinals, Stapled tallied 73 receptions for 1,253 yards and five touchdowns.
