Video games and eSports may have a chance of being part of the 2024 Olympics.
The youth's massive interest in eSports could be a huge draw for the Olympics, which is something that Estanguet sees as a good opportunity to invest in.
France's bid committee co-president Tony Estanguet told the Associated Press that a conversation will be held to discuss the merits of including the digital "sport", which is rapidly growing in popularity.
"Look, there's 11 years before the Games, so it wouldn't hurt if they took a year or even six months instead of rushing", said Jed Parriott, an organizer of the NOlympics LA group. This past April, the Olympic Council of Asia announced the first medal event for esports will unfold at the 2022 Asian Games. Estanguet, however, has said that he hopes to get all sides to interact with each other and "try if we can find some bridges" between the two sides.
Estanguet directs attention to the fact that we have nearly seven years before the event, and that means seven years for the public, and more importantly the International Olympic Committee, to develop their views of competitive gaming. Any changes to the events in the 2024 Olympics will start to be looked at in 2019, with final decisions being made following the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.
"I don't want to say "no" from the beginning. I think it's interesting to interact with the International Olympic Committee, with them, the esports family, to better understand what the process is and why it is such a success", Estanguet told the AP.
While the Paris bid committee seems to have an open mind when it comes to eSports, the IOC's president, Thomas Bach, seems a little more cynical.
As for the fighting game community, it's probably best we be excited at the prospect, but not have any expectations for the time being.
It is curious to think about how gaming could be incorporated into the Olympic Games. "We are not yet 100 per cent clear whether esports is really sport, with regard to physical activity and what it needs to be considered sport", he said.
