Jose Mourinho breaks silence on Manchester United's failed Alvaro Morata transfer

United offered £60million but Real demanded £80million and a deal fell down despite Morata wanting the move and personally intervening to try and smooth it through.

United insiders believe a bid from Real is imminent as the two clubs prepare to meet on their U.S. tour in Santa Clara on July 23.

The 24-year-old striker is now with Real Madrid in the United States for their pre-season preparations and there are suggestions that Zinedine Zidane would not mind having him in his squad next term.

Mourinho admits he targeted four new players and is halfway there with the signing of Romelu Lukaku at £75million and Viktor Lindelof who cost £31million. "It's understandable", Mourinho said from United's training camp at UCLA in Los Angeles ahead of the pre-season firiendly with LA Galaxy on Sunday.

However, it wasn't just Chelsea who were left looking a bit silly - according to Marca at least, who saw a photo of Morata on his Instagram page with very short hair indeed - that looked like it had been dyed red. It is obvious, it is public and we have not reached an economic agreement.

"But I don't want to say that because everything is so hard I wouldn't like to be in Ed Woodward's position negotiating because everything is really hard".

'We have options. Good options, good players, but a target man, a clear number nine - we thought that was Romelu'. Madrid has decided and we have not come to an agreement.

'It is a right of Madrid to ask for their players the amount they want. "And we didn't arrive at an agreement with Real Madrid".

Jose Mourinho needed a world class frontman and Morata needed more first team football having been in the shadow of Cristiano Ronaldo, Gareth Bale and Karim Benzema for too long.
